Be Prepared!
We ask that everyone in the home is 100% involved in the puppy rearing process, we find if the entire household has the commitment to the new puppy the puppy learns more easily and much faster. Having mixed signals slows the learning process and confuses the new puppy. Please understand this is a new family member you will have for many many years to come.
1. Puppy proof your house! It may mean getting down on the floor and seeing things through the puppy perspective.Understand the serious consequence of a puppy ingesting a toy or even a piece of material.
2. Call your veterinarian and be aware of costs.Ask and friends and coworkers for recommendations on not only vets but pet insurance. More and more companies are offering it.
3. Purchase through Amazon or at Cesar Milan's' site The Dog Whisperer ,some of his puppy dvds'.
3. Read. Read and do your homework.
4.Understand your puppy cannot go anywhere until the series of puppy vaccinations are finished. This can be approximately around 14 to 16 weeks of age.
5.Look into the option of doing blood work titers on your adult dog instead of vaccinating over and over every year.Ask your vet. Most states accept this as proof of vaccination.
6.Study up on lyme disease prevention and options. More and more dogs test positive so what can that mean to your dog,and your family ?
7. Feeding your dog well is important , find your local dog food supplier ahead of time. We recommend Canidae and Wellness.
8.Call your local dog schools and trainers and find out the cost of puppy kindergarten and the next class of basic obedience. One on one training is nice but a large class is great for socialization and the distractions. NOTE**Make sure they ask if all dogs are required to show copies of proof of vaccination, your puppy has been through make sure they care that all of them have had it.
9.Chewing and toys, please have safe indestructible toys ,and that You own the toys and the puppy does not.
10.Crating is essential as part of the house breaking process and for safety reasons. Friends and neighbors may have a crate they no longer need.
Check out www.revivalanimal.com for dog puzzles , shampoos ,vitamins etc. and even crates, sometimes shipping is free and is cheaper than pet supply stores.
